Maybe you’ve heard the word Tapas in a yoga class, or perhaps you’re a yoga teacher deepening your understanding of this principle. Or maybe you’re simply curious why this concept is so essential for transformation; on and off the mat.

Many people associate yoga with relaxation and softness, but yoga philosophy tells a broader story. Within the Niyamas—the internal observances that guide how we relate to ourselves—lies Tapas, often translated as discipline, heat, or the inner fire of transformation.

Tapas in yoga isn’t about forcing or pushing; it’s the energy that sustains growth, consistency, and meaningful change. It’s the spark that helps us break old patterns and create healthier ones.
